Tasman Sea

Tasman Sea

This image represents one of those rare moments where the elements come together in perfect harmony. It was just past midnight, and the moon, shrouded by thick clouds, cast a faint, diffused light over the scene. I was captivated by the interplay between the subtle glow of the sky and the textured layers of the rocks below, each step carefully balanced to create a sense of depth and calm.

The long exposure—over 20 minutes—allowed the scene to transform, softening the water into a misty veil and pulling out the rich blues and subtle highlights that aren’t visible to the naked eye. The gentle movement of the waves smoothed into a dreamlike haze, while the rocks remained sharp and steadfast, anchoring the composition in contrast to the ethereal light.

What I wanted most in this photograph was to embrace the moody tones of the night—those deep, velvety blues that evoke a sense of mystery and serenity. It wasn’t just about capturing the view; it was about creating a mood, a quiet moment of reflection under the moon’s watchful presence, and the patience it took to let time and light paint the scene.
