Thursday, November 19, 7:00 pm. Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Suite A101.

Randy Lewis is a P’squosa/Wenatchi historian and leader. He wrote the foreword to Washington Wide, and he helped organize the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz and the 1970 Fort Lawton Takeover in Seattle. His foreword draws on growing up with his grandparents, following the seasonal round of food gathering across the Plateau.

We’ll talk about the places in the book, the thirty years of film behind it, and the country east of the Cascades that gets left out of most books on this state.

Copies will be on sale at the event. I’ll sign after the conversation, and there’s time for audience questions.

The event is free. RSVP is recommended through the Third Place Books event page: thirdplacebooks.com/event/john-shephard

Randy Lewis’s foreword starts on the Colville Reservation, in high desert sagebrush country. It then follows the old route over Blewett Pass and up through Tumwater Canyon, roads many cardholders in the district drive today.

The book is 172 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches. It holds panoramic photographs from thirty years across Washington State, shot on Fuji Velvia 50 film.

Washington Wide has been added to the collection at Central Washington University’s Archives & Special Collections in Ellensburg. Thank you to Julia Stringfellow and the archives team for taking it in.

The archives opened in 2005. It keeps the university’s own records and also serves as a regional repository for the cultural history of central Washington. A book about the whole state belongs in that kind of collection, and Central Washington is the part of the state that connects the Cascades to the Columbia Plateau, so I’m glad it’s there.

Washington Wide is a 172-page hardcover of panoramic photographs shot on Fujichrome Velvia 50 film over more than thirty years, with a foreword by Randy Lewis. The archives holds a copy for the long term, and it’s one of several university library collections that now have the book.

CWU Archives & Special Collections
Brooks Library, 400 E University Way, Ellensburg, WA 98926
Open Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm during the academic year

On Tuesday, December 8, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific, the WSU Alumni Association is hosting me for Authors & Insights, part of its Crimson to Career series. It’s a free virtual event on Zoom, open to all Cougs and friends.

I’ve photographed Washington State in panoramic for more than three decades, and that work is now a book, Washington Wide. For this talk I’ll start at WSU and trace the path from there to landscape photographer, educator, and author, then go through the decades-long journey that ended in publication. We’ll look at the photographs, hear the stories behind them, and get into how the book was made. My friend and fellow Coug Andi is joining me as co-presenter, and the hour closes with audience Q&A.

Come for the photography and stay for the stories behind it.

Magnolia’s Bookstore has been serving Magnolia Village since 1992, and Washington Wide is now on its shelves. Thank you to the staff for carrying it.

It’s a general independent bookstore with books for all ages, free gift wrapping, gift certificates in any amount, and staff recommendations posted around the store. The store doesn’t take orders online. Customers come in, call, or email, and the staff will hold a book or track one down for you. I like that kind of store, and I’m glad the book is in one.

You’ll find it at 3206 W. McGraw St., in the middle of Magnolia Village. The store lists its hours as Monday through Friday, 9am to 7pm, Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and Sunday, noon to 5pm. The phone number is (206) 283-1062, and the website is magnoliasbookstore.com.

Washington Wide is now stocked at Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds. Thank you to Gwen Johnson and the team for carrying it.

Cascadia is a nonprofit museum devoted to the visual arts and design of the Northwest from 1860 to 1970. Its exhibitions, publications, and public programs give particular attention wide diversity of artists whose work shaped the region’s identity. It’s the only museum in the country dedicated solely to Northwest art.

This January, the museum opens a two-year exhibition on the history of Washington State art. A book about what this state looks like fits well in a museum devoted to the region’s art, and I’m glad it will be on the shelf while that exhibition runs.

Washington Wide is 172 pages of panoramic photographs, made over more than thirty years entirely on Fujichrome Velvia 50 film. It moves through glaciers, coast, high desert, and prairie, because one state holds more variety than most people expect. Randy Lewis wrote the foreword.
